GTA 6 Airs Its First TV Spot During NBA Opening Night — With the Shower Scenes Trimmed
Grand Theft Auto VI made its broadcast television debut on October 20, 2026, when a 90-second spot aired across multiple NBA opening-night matchups including Knicks vs. 76ers, Pistons vs. Celtics, and Thunder vs. Spurs on NBC Sports. It marks the first time Rockstar’s upcoming open-world game has reached the mass-market TV audience that tends to sit outside the core gaming press cycle, and the timing — the first night of the NBA season, a guaranteed prime-time ratings draw — signals the scale of the marketing push Rockstar and Take-Two have planned for the final stretch before the November 19 launch.
The spot is a reworked version of the surprise launch trailer that dropped October 15. Network broadcast standards required the removal of two of the three shower scenes featuring protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos that appeared in the original cut. The first shower scene remains intact; the two that were excised were apparently deemed too explicit for over-the-air television. Rockstar filled the resulting runtime gap with a handful of extended shots: a slightly longer plane sequence, additional frames of Jason and Lucia together, and a few extra beats after an affectionate arm-punch moment between the two characters.
Eagle-eyed viewers also noted the absence of the Xbox Series X|S branding that appeared in equivalent promotional materials. The TV spot carried only PlayStation 5 branding, consistent with a reported marketing partnership between Sony and Rockstar that grants PlayStation preferred placement in broadcast advertising. The underlying game content — high-speed car chases, gunfights, robbery, and a wide-angle sweep of Vice City’s skyline — passed network standards without modification, a detail Kotaku noted with some dry amusement given the contrast with the shower scenes.
The broadcast debut lands with GTA 6 now fewer than four weeks from release, a window in which Rockstar is expected to escalate advertising spend significantly. Review codes are widely anticipated before the end of October, and the studio’s promotional calendar has produced at least one major announcement every week since early September. Whether the full, uncut version of the TV spot eventually airs on cable or streaming platforms — where broadcast standards don’t apply — has not been confirmed.
