The Golden Joystick Awards, the world's longest-running public video game awards, officially confirmed this week that its 2026 ceremony will take place on November 11 at the Troxy in London. That means GTA 6 will not appear on any shortlist this year and cannot compete for any category, including the coveted Ultimate Game of the Year. The game will have to wait until the 2027 Golden Joystick Awards to enter contention, by which point it will be competing against a fresh crop of releases rather than being judged as a brand-new arrival.

The situation is less clear-cut at The Game Awards 2026, where the nominations deadline is expected to fall around November 20 — one day after GTA 6 ships. Technically, the release date falls within the eligibility window, but the practical challenge remains significant: voting juries typically submit nominations weeks in advance, meaning review copies would need to reach critics well before launch for the title to factor into deliberations. GTA 6 currently sits as a heavy favourite in betting markets for Game of the Year, making the timing quirk all the more ironic.

The news underscores the unusual release calendar surrounding what many analysts expect to be the best-selling entertainment product in history. Rockstar has so far not announced when press review copies will be distributed, and the studio's historically tight embargo policies suggest early critical access is far from guaranteed.
