Don't Wait for a Christmas Sale on GTA 6, Zelnick Warns: 'We Preserved Our Pricing for a Very Long Time'

Shoppers hoping to pick up Grand Theft Auto VI at a reduced price during the 2026 holiday season should not hold their breath. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick made the company's pricing intentions explicit in his recent CNBC interview, stating that the publisher 'preserved our pricing on Grand Theft Auto 5 for a very long time' and that GTA 6 will be managed in the same way. With the standard edition priced at $79.99 and the game launching on November 19 — barely five weeks before Christmas — the window for a holiday markdown was always narrow, but Zelnick effectively closed it.

The caveat Zelnick offered is a limited one: Take-Two sets the manufacturer's suggested retail price, but individual storefronts are free to discount below that level at their own expense. In practice, however, major retailers typically absorb those losses as promotional tactics, and Zelnick signalled he views such moves as unlikely given the game's demand trajectory. With pre-orders described by multiple outlets as breaking records, no retailer has a commercial incentive to subsidise discounts on a product that is already selling at full price.

The GTA 5 precedent Zelnick cited is instructive. That game launched at $59.99 in September 2013 and held close to its original price across multiple platform generations for years, with meaningful discounts arriving only after Rockstar had extracted years of full-price revenue from successive console ports and the long tail of GTA Online. If GTA 6 follows even a fraction of that pattern, the $79.99 floor may well persist through much of 2027.

The statement matters most for consumers on the fence. Anyone expecting a 'wait and buy it on sale at Christmas' strategy to pay off within the first holiday season after launch has now been directly warned by the publisher not to count on it. Zelnick did not rule out price reductions through temporary sales or bundle offers at some unspecified future point, but offered no timeline — the message was unmistakably that for the foreseeable post-launch period, $79.99 is the price.
