Rockstar Confirms GTA 6 NPCs Will React to Openly Carried Weapons
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has revealed a significant change to how weapons work in Grand Theft Auto VI: the days of casually strolling through Vice City with a rifle are over. In a new interview, Nelson explained that NPCs will now visibly react to armed players, with pedestrians moving away or fleeing when a character walks around with a gun in hand. The shift reflects Rockstar's broader goal of making the world feel more alive and believable ahead of the game's November 19 release.
The new carrying system introduces a meaningful distinction between concealed and visible weapons. Players will be able to hide up to two handguns on their person without triggering a reaction from the public. Long guns — rifles, shotguns, and similar firearms — will always be visible, either holstered on a character's back or held in hand. Nelson noted that a long gun slung on a back causes relatively little alarm, but the moment a player raises or brandishes it, nearby NPCs take notice.
Law enforcement also factors into the equation. Police in GTA 6 will respond differently depending on how weapons are displayed, with openly held rifles attracting attention even without any other criminal act. Nelson pointed to GTA 5 as a contrast, where players could conjure a shotgun out of nowhere without consequences — a design he acknowledged no longer fits the more detailed, reactive world Rockstar has built for the sequel.
The changes are part of a wider push in GTA 6 toward behavior that feels grounded in the game's Florida-inspired setting. With only around ten weeks left before launch, Rockstar has been gradually surfacing mechanics that paint a picture of a world more responsive to player choices than any previous entry in the series.
