Twitch CEO Claims GTA 6 Online Will Launch in 2027, Not at Game’s November Release

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy raised eyebrows at Tokyo Game Show 2026 when he claimed, based on direct discussions with Rockstar Games, that the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto VI is not expected to launch until 2027. Speaking to Bloomberg on the sidelines of the Tokyo event on September 17, Clancy described lengthy conversations his team has had with Rockstar regarding how GTA 6 Online could benefit Twitch’s creator ecosystem — and indicated the wait for online play would extend well beyond the single-player game’s November 19, 2026 release.

Clancy’s comments align with a pattern Rockstar has followed before. Grand Theft Auto V launched its online mode two weeks after the base game in 2013, while Red Dead Redemption 2 waited several months before opening its online world. For GTA 6, the gap may be far longer. Clancy told Bloomberg he anticipates “a big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer,” implying Rockstar has communicated at least a rough 2027 window to streaming platform partners.

Neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two Interactive has officially commented on a separate GTA 6 Online product, and both companies continue to market Grand Theft Auto VI strictly as a single-player experience ahead of launch. Take-Two has acknowledged in court documents that a “32-player online format” is in development, but no release window has been made official. Clancy’s remarks, while coming from a credible third-party source with an apparent inside line, should be treated as unconfirmed until Rockstar addresses the timeline directly.

If the 2027 projection holds, it would give Rockstar considerable time to polish the online infrastructure before opening the floodgates to what analysts widely expect to be the largest simultaneous player surge in gaming history. The single-player adventure of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in the sun-baked state of Leonida would, under this scenario, have the stage entirely to itself for its first year on sale.
