Take-Two Reports 'Exceptional' GTA 6 Pre-Order Start at Q1 Earnings Call
Take-Two Interactive held its first-quarter fiscal year 2027 earnings call on August 7, 2026, and Grand Theft Auto VI dominated investor attention. Pre-orders for the game opened on June 25, meaning this was the first financial snapshot to capture any pre-order activity for the long-awaited title. The company reported overall net bookings of $1.39 billion for the quarter, down slightly from $1.49 billion the prior year, but all eyes were on what Take-Two would say about GTA 6 specifically.
CEO Strauss Zelnick and the Take-Two team described the situation in carefully chosen terms: global excitement for GTA VI 'continues to build,' and the title has had 'an exceptional start to pre-orders.' The company deliberately declined to provide a specific pre-order unit count, a choice that drew mixed reactions from analysts. Optimists note that Take-Two rarely hypes its own results; sceptics point out that genuinely extraordinary numbers would typically be disclosed to reassure investors.
Third-party data offers some additional colour. Analytics firm Newzoo characterized the opening week of GTA 6 pre-orders as the strongest it has ever recorded in its dataset, estimating approximately $180 million in digital pre-order spending across the United States and five major European markets in that window alone. That figure covers only a portion of the global market and only digital storefronts, meaning the true first-week number is likely higher when physical and other regions are included.
With the November 19 launch now less than four months away, the next major milestone is the Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiere on Netflix and Rockstar's YouTube channel on August 27. Take-Two's measured but positive language on the earnings call, combined with Newzoo's data, paints a picture of a game that is tracking to become one of the largest commercial launches in entertainment history — even before a single copy has shipped.
