Rockstar's Rob Nelson Reveals Criminal Profile System, Reworked Hotwiring, and Optional Romance in Major IGN Interview

Rockstar Games co-studio head Rob Nelson sat down with IGN for an extensive one-on-one interview published October 7, offering the most detailed look yet at Grand Theft Auto VI's interconnected systems ahead of the game's November 19 launch. The conversation, framed around how GTA 6 redefines player agency within Leonida, ranges from narrative design to moment-to-moment mechanics — and confirms that several long-speculated features are real.

Among the most notable reveals is the Criminal Profile system, a dynamic tracking mechanic that logs the kind of offenses a player commits over time and adjusts how the world responds accordingly. Nelson described it as distinct from Red Dead Redemption 2's honor system, noting that consistent sorts of actions may have an impact in terms of how the world reacts to you. Paired with an overhauled wanted system — where crimes only register if witnessed by an NPC or triggered by an alarm — the Criminal Profile adds a layer of strategic identity to how players choose to operate in Vice City.

Nelson also addressed car theft directly: the ability to instantly hotwire any vehicle is gone. Players will now need specific tools such as key cloners or slim-jims to access locked cars, though old-fashioned carjacking remains an always-available fallback. Police heat has similarly been redesigned; officers remember a suspect's appearance between encounters, meaning players can shed wanted levels by purchasing new outfits rather than simply breaking line of sight and waiting.

On the story side, Nelson confirmed that the romantic relationship between protagonists Jason and Lucia is entirely optional — Rockstar did not want to force the dynamic on players who prefer to experience the narrative differently. Beyond the headline items, the interview also touched on quality-of-life additions including gyms and a fitness system, weight gain tied to overeating, and a new in-game social media app called Snapmatic. With the November 19 release date now under seven weeks away, the breadth of what Nelson outlined underscores that GTA 6's systemic ambitions go well beyond what earlier previews had suggested.
