GTA 6 Merchandise Triggers Scalper Frenzy and Crowd Chaos at Tokyo Game Show 2026
With just two months until its November 19 launch, Grand Theft Auto VI's marketing reach extended to Tokyo Game Show 2026, where the PlayStation booth offered free GTA 6-branded T-shirts as part of its promotional experience. The shirts — featuring PlayStation button symbols rendered in the game's signature Vice City gradient palette — quickly attracted far more attention than intended, as professional scalpers identified them as resale opportunities almost immediately after the show floor opened.
According to reporting by Kotaku, the shirts began appearing on the Japanese auction platform Mercari within hours, listed at over 12,000 yen (roughly $76) apiece — many times their actual production cost. The situation extended beyond T-shirts: a collaborative Red Bull promotion offering limited-edition light-up metal tumblers became so overwhelmed by resellers and opportunistic buyers that organizers were forced to temporarily halt distribution entirely after crowd conditions grew dangerous. The tumblers were later spotted on resale sites for upwards of 6,000 yen ($38).
The scenes at TGS mirror broader enthusiasm surrounding GTA 6 as the release window approaches. Rockstar and Sony had not issued any statement specifically addressing the scalper behavior by the time the report was published. The episode does underscore a pattern that has followed GTA 6 throughout its promotional rollout: virtually any official or semi-official merchandise associated with the game rapidly becomes a collector's item and a resale commodity, reflecting the outsized cultural anticipation the title continues to generate.
