Rockstar Spent Years Rethinking GTA 6’s Weapon Wheel Before Sticking With It

Development on Grand Theft Auto VI involved a years-long debate over one of the series’ most iconic interface elements: the weapon wheel. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who recently visited Rockstar North as part of an ongoing series of in-depth previews, shared new details in a YouTube video revealing just how long the studio wrestled with the design. According to Schreier, the team at Rockstar spent months — possibly years — experimenting with alternatives, with one developer describing the process as trying “trays and webs and all sorts of different things,” and even removing the selection interface altogether at one point.

The impetus for the overhaul was a desire to align GTA 6 more closely with the grounded realism of Red Dead Redemption 2, which limited players to a small number of simultaneously carried weapons. The fear was that grafting that carry cap onto GTA 5’s existing radial menu would leave players staring at a wheel dotted with empty, greyed-out slots — an experience the team considered visually cluttered and tonally mismatched with the game’s world. The frustration reportedly contributed to tensions within development teams between 2019 and 2022, and Schreier noted that some designers left the studio partly over disagreements tied to these systems.

Ultimately, Rockstar settled on a modified version of the familiar wheel. GTA 6 retains the circular radial layout but folds weapons and gear into a single unified menu rather than two separate screens, while still enforcing a carry limit inspired by RDR2. The game also introduces a new wrinkle: non-player characters will visually react to weapons a player openly displays, adding a social consequence layer to loadout choices that has no equivalent in GTA 5. Development momentum reportedly stabilised in late 2022 and improved further after the first trailer dropped in December 2023.

Schreier’s conversation with Rockstar North development boss Rob Nelson, which formed the basis of the YouTube breakdown, is part of a wider preview campaign ahead of the game’s November 19, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The weapon wheel details were not part of Schreier’s earlier Bloomberg long-form piece, marking this as new, previously unreleased reporting from inside the studio.
