Xbox Denies Report of Exclusive GTA 6 Cloud Gaming Streaming Rights
A report published by The Verge on October 6 claimed that Xbox had secured exclusive cloud gaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI at launch on November 19. According to the report, Xbox head Asha Sharma announced the arrangement to employees during an all-hands meeting, framing it as something "no other platform holder is doing." The supposed deal would have allowed Xbox Cloud Gaming subscribers — including PC gamers without access to a native PC version — to stream the game from day one, while competing streaming services would have been locked out.
The claim was quickly contradicted by Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, who took to social media to set the record straight. "We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC," Ball wrote. The denial effectively confirmed that no exclusive streaming arrangement is in place, meaning all cloud platforms should have equal access whenever they opt to support the title.
The episode unfolded against the backdrop of a broader Xbox cloud gaming restructuring that the company announced around the same time. Xbox has introduced streaming hour caps for Game Pass Ultimate members — limited to 15 hours per month — and new pay-as-you-go streaming bundles set to launch in November. While the exclusive deal itself appears to have been a miscommunication or internal messaging error, the underlying news confirms that Xbox is pushing cloud streaming as a key part of its GTA 6 launch strategy.
For players, the key takeaway is that GTA 6 remains a console-first experience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch, with no native PC release announced and no exclusive streaming arrangement in place. Rockstar Games has not commented publicly on the cloud gaming dispute.
