Miami Beach Votes 4-3 to Negotiate GTA 6 Advertising Deal with Rockstar
Miami Beach commissioners voted 4-3 on September 11 to authorize their city manager to enter negotiations with Rockstar Games over a marketing partnership tied to Grand Theft Auto VI. Under the proposed agreement, Rockstar would gain the right to advertise the game across city-owned locations — including local signage and beach umbrellas — in exchange for payments described as running into the millions of dollars. Supporters argued the revenue could be directed toward community improvements, including parks and recreational facilities.
The vote was not without controversy. Commissioner David Suarez voted against the deal, stating bluntly: 'I certainly don't want to see our brand associated with this video game. I don't think it's worth any amount of money.' Miami Mayor Steven Meiner also raised eyebrows at how the proposal reached the commission floor, noting it appeared to have bypassed normal city review procedures — an unusual step he suggested warranted scrutiny, with questions raised about possible lobbyist involvement in expediting the agreement.
The opposition has broader backing. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz had previously weighed in on related marketing proposals, calling Grand Theft Auto 'a video game franchise built around criminal activity.' Those concerns were echoed by other local officials skeptical of lending government infrastructure to a game whose fictional Vice City is a thinly veiled stand-in for Miami Beach itself. Commissioner Monica Matteo-Salinas, however, pushed back against that framing, calling the vote 'a win for gamers and gaming nerds such as myself' and arguing that law-abiding adults enjoy the franchise without any correlation to real-world crime.
The 4-3 vote authorizes negotiation rather than finalizing a deal, so the specifics of what Rockstar advertising might look like on Miami Beach boardwalks or city property remain to be hammered out. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — a timeline that gives both parties fewer than ten weeks to conclude any agreement before the game ships. Whether the deal ultimately proceeds or collapses in negotiation, the vote itself marks a striking moment: a real-world city whose streets inspired Vice City actively debating whether to profit from that association.
