Rockstar Workers File for Union Recognition as GTA 6 Launch Approaches
Workers at Rockstar Games have filed a formal request for union recognition with the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), according to reporting by The Guardian published June 30. The application, submitted through the IWGB’s Game Workers division, asks Rockstar to voluntarily recognize the Rockstar Game Workers Union and enter into collective bargaining talks ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI’s November 19 launch. It is one of the most significant labor actions to target a major games studio in the run-up to what is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment releases in history.
The push for union recognition has its roots in the October 2025 termination of more than 30 employees across Rockstar’s UK and Canadian studios. Rockstar described those dismissals as the result of ‘gross misconduct,’ but the IWGB publicly accused the company of union-busting, and several of the affected workers have been centrally involved in organizing the current campaign. Jordan Garland, an 11-year Rockstar veteran who was among those laid off, said the union’s goal is to ‘ensure this sort of thing never happens again, not just at Rockstar but anywhere in the industry.’
The workers’ core demands center on pay transparency, flexible working arrangements, and an end to the industry-wide practice of crunch — the extended mandatory overtime that has long characterized triple-A game development. Production coordinator Shanti Easton-Steel indicated that the organizing group now feels it is in a ‘strong enough position’ to pursue formal recognition, suggesting that internal support has grown significantly since the original terminations.
Should Rockstar decline to voluntarily recognize the union, the IWGB and its members are prepared to escalate. Strike action has been explicitly discussed as a potential next step, which would be a historic development given the proximity to GTA 6’s release window. Rockstar has previously called union-busting allegations ‘entirely false and misleading’ and has not publicly responded to today’s formal filing. The outcome will be closely watched across the games industry, where unionization drives have recently succeeded at studios including Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and Ubisoft.
