Rockstar Breaks Silence on Union Bid, Agrees to Meet with IWGB Representatives

Rockstar Games has broken its silence on the union recognition campaign launched by its UK workforce, issuing a formal statement on July 1 — one day after the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain filed a recognition request on behalf of the newly formed Rockstar Game Workers Union. In its response, the company said: "We have received a request from a union seeking to discuss voluntary recognition. We value an open and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders and will arrange to meet." Rockstar added that it remains committed to providing "world-class work environments and ongoing career opportunities" for its teams.

The statement represents a notable shift from Rockstar's previous posture. When the IWGB filed its formal application on June 30, the company had not publicly responded. The filing itself was the culmination of months of organizing that accelerated sharply following the October 2025 dismissal of more than 31 employees across Rockstar's UK and Canadian studios. Rockstar attributed those terminations to the "distribution of confidential information in a public forum," while the IWGB and affected workers characterized the action as union-busting — an allegation the company has called "entirely false and misleading."

The Rockstar Game Workers Union's demands center on three core issues: pay transparency across all roles, flexible working arrangements, and formal protections against crunch — the extended mandatory overtime that has shaped development culture at triple-A studios for decades. Production coordinator Shanti Easton-Steel has said that winning recognition would serve as a tribute to the colleagues dismissed last year, while Jordan Garland, an 11-year Rockstar veteran among those terminated, has publicly urged the company to come to the table voluntarily.

Agreeing to meet is only a first step, and the outcome of any talks remains far from certain. The IWGB has been explicit that it is prepared to escalate if Rockstar declines to formally recognize the union, with strike action explicitly named as a potential response. The stakes could scarcely be higher: Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, and any work stoppage in the lead-up to that date would carry enormous consequences for one of the most anticipated entertainment releases in history. The games industry will be watching closely to see whether today's statement translates into substantive negotiations.
