Rockstar Workers Union Holds First Meeting With Management, Tables Five-Point Demand List
The Rockstar Game Workers Union has held its first formal meeting with Rockstar Games management, marking a significant escalation in the monthslong effort to secure collective bargaining rights before Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19. The meeting, confirmed by multiple outlets on July 22, produced what the union described as a productive opening session that secured agreement on a "speedy negotiation process" for the months ahead — though no details of any specific concessions by management have emerged.
At the meeting, union representatives tabled a five-point demand list. On working conditions, the union called for the abolition of unpaid crunch, specifying that all overtime must be compensated. On pay, it demanded full transparency around the discretionary bonus structures that can account for up to a fifth of a worker's annual salary. On work arrangements, it asked for the reinstatement of flexible and remote working options. On technology, the union added a new demand not previously foregrounded in its public campaign: an explicit commitment that no employee's role or creative output would be replaced by artificial intelligence. Finally, the union sought a binding commitment against further layoffs — a demand that carries particular weight given that more than 31 employees were terminated in October 2025 in circumstances the IWGB described as union-busting.
No outcomes or agreements from the meeting have been disclosed. The union acknowledged it has received no formal response from Rockstar on the substance of its demands, and the studio has not issued a public comment beyond its July 1 statement in which it agreed to enter dialogue. According to the union's account, the next procedural step is agreeing the composition of the bargaining unit — the defined group of workers the union will formally represent — before substantive negotiations on the demand list can begin.
The timing of these talks is unusually high-stakes. With GTA 6 less than four months from release, any escalation — including the strike action the IWGB has explicitly named as a potential response to a breakdown in talks — would carry enormous consequences for Rockstar, Take-Two Interactive, and the broader games industry. The Rockstar Game Workers Union has claimed it is now the largest game studio union in Europe, and its ability to translate that membership into meaningful concessions before November 19 will be closely watched by game workers and studio management teams worldwide.
