Rockstar Tightens Modding Rules Ahead of GTA 6 Era
With Grand Theft Auto VI just weeks away from its November 19 launch, Rockstar Games has revised its official modding policy for its existing catalog, asking the community to "respect our games." The updated guidelines, first reported by Kotaku on September 22, 2026, explicitly prohibit modifications that alter official storylines, missions, or established character continuity. Also banned are cross-game asset transfers between Rockstar titles, unauthorized ports to consoles or platforms, and the integration of third-party intellectual property without permission.
The policy also restricts how modders can engage with multiplayer content, limiting online modifications to Rockstar's own Creator Platform. Voice actor performances and real-world likenesses cannot be repurposed in mods, and any form of monetization of fan-made content remains off-limits. The guidelines currently govern existing releases — Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 — but industry observers note they foreshadow how Rockstar is likely to approach the GTA 6 modding scene, particularly once the game eventually reaches PC.
The update arrives at a sensitive moment for the modding community. Over the past year, several established fan-run modding platforms have shut down following escalating friction with Rockstar, and the new language reinforces limits that dedicated modders had long tested. While Rockstar has historically tolerated a wide range of single-player mods for GTA V, the revised policy draws firmer lines around narrative and character integrity — areas that some of the most ambitious mods have touched. For a fanbase eagerly awaiting what GTA 6 could offer creative players, the guidelines offer a cautious preview of what the studio will and will not permit in the next generation of its flagship franchise.
