Stephen Root Becomes First Actor to Officially Confirm a GTA 6 Role

In what appears to be the first on-the-record confirmation of a named voice actor for Grand Theft Auto VI, Stephen Root told AP News at the BAFTA TV Tea Party on September 14 that he is in the game. Asked about his involvement, Root kept it simple: "You're gonna see me in there." The veteran character actor — best known for playing Milton in Office Space, Lionel Fusco in Person of Interest, and Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill — has been identified as the voice behind Brian Heder, a drug smuggler based in the Leonida Keys who serves as a mentor to protagonist Jason.

Fans had begun piecing together Root's involvement well before his public confirmation, largely by recognising his voice from King of the Hill clips that circulated online after the Extended Look dropped on August 27. Root acknowledged the detective work, noting that most people had clocked him through the animated series. He was also enthusiastic about the project itself, describing GTA VI as "an amazing thing to look at" — a sentiment shared by the roughly four million concurrent viewers who tuned in for the gameplay reveal.

Rockstar Games has yet to release an official cast list for GTA VI, and most actors involved in the project have so far remained silent under apparent non-disclosure agreements. Root's confirmation therefore stands as a rare authoritative data point in what has otherwise been a landscape of fan-driven detective work and anonymous leaks. With just over two months remaining until the November 19 launch, further cast confirmations — voluntary or otherwise — seem increasingly likely as promotional activity ramps up.
