GTA 6 PS5 Retail Codes Are Region-Locked — Xbox Copies Are Not
Rockstar Support has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI's PS5 retail packages — which, as previously announced, will contain a download code rather than a physical disc — come with regional restrictions. A code purchased in one territory can only be redeemed by a PlayStation Network account associated with that same region. Buyers who import the game or purchase from an overseas retailer risk being unable to redeem their code at all.
The platform split is notable. Xbox Series X|S codes for GTA 6 carry no equivalent region lock, meaning Xbox buyers can purchase from any country without worrying about account compatibility. The asymmetry stems from PlayStation's underlying code redemption system rather than a deliberate Rockstar editorial decision, but the practical impact falls entirely on PS5 players.
Rockstar's support page lists affected regions including North America, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, and various European and Asian territories — in effect, every major market. The confirmation compounds existing frustration over GTA 6's disc-free physical release: players paying premium prices for a boxed edition now face account-region checks that disc buyers would never have encountered.
The news is separate from — though related to — last week's revelation that Japanese GTA 6 PS5 codes will expire 170 days after launch due to local consumer regulations. Together, the two announcements highlight a significantly more complex purchasing situation for PS5 buyers worldwide compared to their Xbox counterparts ahead of the November 19, 2026 launch.
